NIN vs BVN: what's the difference?

6 MINMAY 2026

Both are 11-digit identification numbers and both are frequently requested when you are trying to open an account or apply for a document. But they are not the same thing.

What is the NIN?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). It is your lifetime biometric identity number.

What is the BVN?

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) is issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria through the banking system, introduced in 2014 to reduce fraud.

When do you need each one?

NIN is for almost everything outside banking: passport, JAMB, NYSC, government benefits.

BVN is required for anything inside the financial system: opening accounts, loans, fintech apps.

Key takeaways

  • NIN is issued by NIMC and covers government and civic purposes
  • BVN is issued via the banking system and covers all financial activity
  • Both are 11 digits but link to completely separate databases
  • Enrol for NIN at any NIMC centre; enrol for BVN at any bank branch
