Lost Your Certificate? Here's Exactly What to Do Next

Step 1: File a Police Report

Before anything else, go to your nearest police station and file a report documenting the loss. You'll receive a Police Extract (or Police Report), which is a requirement for replacement from almost every issuing authority in Nigeria.

Bring: - Your ID (NIN card, PVC, or any valid photo ID) - A written statement of how and when the certificate was lost

Keep several certified copies of this report, you'll likely need it multiple times.

Step 2: Swear an Affidavit of Loss

Visit a magistrate court or notary public and swear an affidavit declaring that you have lost the document in question. This is a legal statement and typically costs between ₦500 and ₦2,000.

Step 3: Contact the Issuing Authority

NECO Certificate: - Visit neco.gov.ng for result verification - Contact your state NECO office for physical certificate replacement - Required: Same as WAEC, police report, affidavit, exam number, and fee

University Degree Certificate: - Visit your university's registry or examination office in person - Request a replacement letter or affidavit-backed re-issuance - Required: Police report, affidavit, student ID number, and a replacement fee - Note: Many universities issue a "Letter of Confirmation" while the physical certificate is being reprinted

NYSC Discharge Certificate: - Visit the NYSC state secretariat where you served - Submit your police report, affidavit of loss, and identity documents - Pay the replacement fee (currently around ₦2,000–₦5,000) - Processing time is typically 2–4 weeks

CAC Certificate: - Log in to portal.cac.gov.ng - Request a Certified True Copy (CTC) of your registration documents - CTCs are legally equivalent to original documents

NIN Card: - Visit any NIMC center with your police report and a valid secondary ID - Pay the replacement fee (currently ₦500–₦1,000) - Your NIN number remains unchanged

Passport: - If lost in Nigeria: Visit an NIS office with a police report, affidavit, two passport photos, and your NIN - If lost abroad: Visit the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate

Some institutions and courts require you to publish a notice of loss in a national newspaper before issuing a replacement. Once you've recovered your document, consider these practices:
