But a surprising number of Nigerians, especially those who've been out of school for a while, aren't entirely clear on what each exam body does, which certificate carries more weight, and when one is preferred over the others. WAEC, West African Examinations Council
What it is: WAEC is a regional examination body established in 1952 that serves five West African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. In Nigeria, WAEC conducts two main examinations:
• WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination), the standard secondary school exit exam taken in May/June each year
